SAFEGUARDING YOUR INTERNET ACTIVITY

NOTE - Taking the steps outlined below may not prevent an abuser from discovering your email and internet activity. If you are in an abusive relationship, the safest way for you to find information about domestic violence on the internet is to go to a safer computer such as at the local library, a friend's house, or your workplace. Otherwise, we recommend you call us for further information (325-655-5774 or 800-749-8631) rather than using the web.

EMAIL

  • If your email software allows you to put a password on your email account, make sure you choose a password that your abuser will not be able to guess and also use numbers, capital letters, and symbols (like ^, #, $, %, &, and ~).

  • If you're not sure how to remove traces of sent and received email messages, we recommend that you call us (325-655-5774 or 800-749-8631) rather than using email. (NOTE: If you do call us and if your phone has the *69 call back feature, then immediately after calling us make a call to someone or somewhere that may not make your abuser suspicious should he/she routinely check the last call made on your phone.)

  • In regard to email you send to friends or family, we recommend that you do not make references to the abuse you are experiencing or to any plans you may have to leave your abuser. Please call them instead.

  • If an abuser sends you threatening or harassing email messages, they may be printed and saved as evidence of this abuse. Additionally, the messages may constitute a federal offense. For more information on this issue, contact your local United States Attorney's Office.

INTERNET EXPLORER

  • After you have finished your visit to the NewBridge site, leave the site and go to another site that you commonly visit (and that may not raise your abuser's suspicions) and follow the steps below.

  • Depending on your IE browser version, find the "Internet Options" menu option under either the "View" or "Tools" menu and click on it.

  • In the "Internet Options" menu box under the "General" tab, click on the "Delete Files" button, check the box to "Delete all offline content" if available, then click on "Yes" or "Okay". It may take several minutes for your computer to delete these files so do not interupt this process.

  • Also under the "General" tab, click on the "Clear History" button, if asked to confirm the deletion, choose "Yes" or "Okay".

  • Please be aware that taking the above steps will erase traces of all visits to all the internet sites that you have visited, not just the NewBridge pages you viewed. If your abuser discovers this, it could make him/her suspicious. If this concerns you, we recommend you call (325-655-5774 or 800-749-8631) us in the future rather than using the internet.(NOTE: If you do call us and if your phone has the *69 call back feature, then immediately after calling us make a call to someone or somewhere that may not make your abuser suspicious should he/she routinely check the last call made on your phone.)

NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR

  • After you have finished your visit to the NewBridge site, leave the site and go to another site that you commonly visit (and that may not raise your abuser's suspicions) and follow the steps below.

  • Go to the "Edit" menu at the top of your screen and choose the "Preferences" option.

  • In the "Navigator" section you'll see a section called "History" and a button called "Clear History". (You may have to double-click the "Navigator" section to see "History"). Click the "Clear History" button, then click "Ok" if you're asked to confirm the deletion.

  • Click the "+" next to the word "Advanced" on the left hand side of the display. You should see the word "Cache" appear below it. Click the word "Cache.

  • Click the button "Clear Memory Cache", clicking "Ok" if you're asked to confirm the deletion.

  • Click the button "Clear Disk Cache", clicking "Ok" if you're asked to confirm the deletion.

  • In the "Location" bar where you type web addresses, type in enough web addresses and go to each of these sites until the www.icdbridges.org/newbridge item no longer appears in the drop down box of the "Location" bar. You can type known web addresses like www.yahoo.com or www.amazon.com or you can simply guess at or even deliberately misspell some web addresses since these will also be added to the drop down list if you press the "Enter" key after typing each one in.

  • Please be aware that taking the above steps will erase traces of all visits to all the internet sites that you have visited, not just the NewBridge pages you viewed. If your abuser discovers this, it could make him/her suspicious. If this concerns you, we recommend you call (325-655-5774 or 800-749-8631) us in the future rather than using the internet. (NOTE: If you do call us and if your phone has the *69 call back feature, then immediately after calling us make a call to someone or somewhere that may not make your abuser suspicious should he/she routinely check the last call made on your phone.)

OTHER BROWSERS

  • Search through the drop down menus at the top of the browser window for menu items similar to the ones described above and take the same kind of actions.

  • If you can't find options that accomplish these things, we recommend that you call in the future (608-251-4445) rather than using the web. (NOTE: If you do call us and if your phone has the *69 call back feature, then immediately after calling us make a call to someone or somewhere that may not make your abuser suspicious should he/she routinely check the last call made on your phone.)
